Good News, Bad News

“Marbles, D, and the Sinister Spotlight” has been delayed.

can spring be far behind?

As I recently discussed elsewhere, mental health problems have significantly delayed my creative efforts for a handful of months. That includes production of “Marbles, D, and the Sinister Spotlight,” the game that I have been writing about here. Because my plans for publishing it are unusual, these lost months will have some unfortunate consequences.

What were these unusual circumstances? You’re looking at them! Posting so much source code for a work in progress will typically disqualify it from participating in community events, but Spring Thing is special. It would have been welcomed as a “back garden” entry in this year’s festival, but I can no longer complete the project in time. Since people really don’t play new games outside of competitions and festivals, I have no choice but to push the project out a year.

now what.

I’ll shift my attention to another work in progress, my “cave game” project.

cave game FAQs

  • What is this cave game?
    • The cave game is a large text adventure game inspired by the world, characters, and gameplay of the Zork trilogy.
  • Do I need to play the Zork games to enjoy the cave game?
    • No! Though you may enjoy some references, it is more important that you know that Zork is a famous thing. There will be some fan fiction stories to help ease you in.
  • When will the cave game be released?
    • That’s a very good question! I would like to release it as part of the annual IF Competition. However, I think that has been moved up to make room for something else? Or not, I’m not sure. There sure are a lot of IF things happening all the time! Who can keep track! …but this game will either be released in IF Competition this year or else Spring Thing of next year.
  • Will the cave game be documented as extensively as “Marbles, D, and the Sinister Spotlight” was, and will complete source code be available?
    • Sadly, no. I do not think that would be acceptable for an IF Comp game. Or for a Spring Thing main festival entry, for that matter. I will have to keep most of my source private and make far fewer posts. But I will continue documenting my process and discussing it along the way. I will release the complete source code after publication, just as I have done with Repeat the Ending.
  • Can I play test your game?

More soon! Thanks for sticking around.
